This spring (2009, remember?) the Itinerant Locals are going down the Ouachita River. Zac, Cheryl, Eureka and Zephyr will be going down pretty much all the river that is easily accessed.
We’ll start the Upper Ouachita at the Pine Ridge put-in on April 6th and camp at Shirley Creek, Rocky Shoals, and Dragover Float Camps. On April 10th, we’ll have the Good Friday Dragover Queen Flotilla, where we “Go ‘Round the Bend” of Dragover in costume on anything that will float (beanbags, air mattresses, cardboard boxes, etc.) and crown one lucky Floater the “Dragover Queen”, who will reign supreme until next year.

The Ouachita River at Shirley Creek Float Camp
On May 1st we will have the MAYDAY! Ouachita Float Tour Kickoff Party at Low Key Arts in Hot Springs. We will be showing some video and pictures from the Upper Ouachita, and sell some stuff to raise some bucks to finance this whole thing, and have some live music and appropriate libations, and get ready to set out the next day on the Lower Ouachita. May 2nd we pile in a canoe at the base of Remmel Dam in Jones Mill and float down the river for a month. We’ll be trading boats in Arkadelphia, and keeping it between the banks for the month of May, all the way down to Old River Control on the Mississippi River.
Our reason for doing all this? We’re not collecting money for Spinal Bifida or trying to make everyone stop eating snail darters or anything that sophisticated. We just wanted to explore some more of this great place where we live, and meet some more of the characters who live here too, and share our adventures with others. So we’re gonna try, real hard this time, to update this page with video and pics and maps, and most important with stories about where we’ve been and who we’ve met.
So why don’t you bookmark us right now, or subscribe to our RSS feed, and journey along with us this spring on our Ouachita Float Tour.
